DENVER, Colo. – The 25
th ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team won two games on Saturday, defeating RMAC opponent University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
In game one, the Roadrunners defeated the Mountain Lions by a final score of 4-0. The game was tied entering the bottom of the fourth inning when the Roadrunners struck for three runs.
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) hit a two-run homerun to start the scoring. Chelse Brew delivered an RBI single up the middle three batters later. The Roadrunners would add another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.).
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) threw a complete game shutout, scattering eight hits over seven innings, the second shutout of her career.
The Roadrunners took game two by the final score of 12-3.
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) struck out six of the first nine batters she faced, but UCCS knocked in three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Roadrunners countered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on back-to-back RBI singles from
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.). MSU Denver exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped off by a 3-run homerun by
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) to end the game. The Roadrunners top five hitters combined to go 9-for-18, and drove in 10 of the 12 MSU Denver runs.
The Roadrunners are back in action Sunday at noon for senior day with another set of games against the Mountain Lions.
