DENVER, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team won two games in convincing fashion on Sunday, defeating UCCS in each game of a double-header. The wins improve the 25
th ranked Roadrunners overall record to 30-10, with a 21-5 record in RMAC play.
In game one, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back en route to a 9-1 win in five innings.
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) was the key to the big first inning, hitting a 3-run homerun.
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) also hit her third homerun of the season in the game.
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) improved to 13-5 on the season after allowing one run on two hits over five innings.
MSU Denver used a dominant pitching performance from
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) to get an 8-0 victory in game two. Mattie struck out eight of the first eleven batters she faced and finished the game with 10 strikeouts and allowed just one hit over five innings. On offense, the Roadrunners used a 6-run third inning to take a commanding lead.
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) hit her sixth homerun of the season and drove in two-runs for the balanced offensive attack.
MSU Denver moved into sole possession of first place in the RMAC and clinched a playoff berth with the wins this weekend. The Roadrunners will be back in action on Saturday, April 18
th with a double-header at Regis.
