DENVER - Redshirt freshman
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) blasted the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning of the left-center field fence to give Metropolitan State University of Denver an 8-7 win over Adams State, the ninth consecutive win for the Roadrunners. They improved to 20-13 overall and 15-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASU dropped to 14-21 and 10-14.
It is the first time the Roadrunners have swept back-to-back conference series since 2008 against Colorado Christian and New Mexico Highlands.
For Maloney, his walk-off home run capped a 4-for-5 day at the plate as he drove in three runs. It was the first walk-off home run for the Roadrunners since 2013.
MSU Denver led 5-0 after two innings, thanks to a three-run first inning and two RBI doubles by
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and Maloney in the second.
The Grizzlies crawled back, getting within one run in the sixth at 7-6.
Reliever
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched a perfect eighth inning, but allowed a leadoff single in the ninth and then hit a batter. After a sacrifice bunt, ASU tied the game at 7-7 on a ground out to second base. Baca then escaped the inning with another ground out and earned his sixth win of the season after Maloney's home run.
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) finished 3-for-4 with a home run and a double and two runs scored. Levett also had two hits.
MSU Denver will host Regis University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a non-conference game.
