DENVER - No. 23 Metropolitan State University of Denver earned a sweep at Regis University on Sunday, winning 7-3 in 10 innings and 5-3 to grab full control over first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners improved to 32-10 overall and 23-5 in the RMAC, while Regis fell to 25-15 and 20-9. The Roadrunners entered the day less than .002 percentage points ahead of Colorado Mesa for first place, but the Mavericks split with Colorado Christian on Sunday to expand MSU Denver's lead.
Strong pitching carried the Roadrunners in Game 1 as
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) allowed just two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings and
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) closed the door with 3 1/3 perfect innings in relief, striking out five in the process.
MSU Denver rallied from a 3-1 deficit when
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth. The game remained tied 3-3 until the 10th when
Britney Thomas (Cheyenne, Wyo./East H.S.) and
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) led off with singles.
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) put MSU Denver ahead with a double and Oury and Towner followed with hits of their own as four runs scored before Regis recorded an out.
Oury finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Towner was 2-for-4 and drove in three.
In Game 2, the Roadrunners broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth.
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) put the them in front with a double to score Oury. Towner and pinch runner
Taryn Calori (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) both scored later on ground outs.
Oury and Bakovich finished with two hits each.
Mattey pitched all seven innings for her second win of the day.
The two teams will meet again for two games on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. at Regis.
