DENVER - Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) threw eight shutout innings in Game 1 to lead Metropolitan State University of Denver to a split with Colorado School of Mines, winning 7-1 and falling 5-2. The Roadrunners are now 21-15 overall and 16-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as their 10-game RMAC winning streak came to an end. Mines is now 13-20 and 8-18.
Lalk allowed just two singles and one walk, while striking out 10 batters in eight innings. He improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) scored the first run of the game, stealing third base on a failed pickoff attempt and scoring on a throwing error on the same play. He then extended the lead to 4-0 in the second with a two-run home run that scored
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.), who doubled in
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.).
After a run scored on a fielder's choice in the fifth, MSU Denver added two in the seventh.
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) each had RBI doubles.
In Game 2,
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) cruised into the sixth inning, retiring 13 of the previous 14 batters heading into the inning. The Orediggers pushed across four runs in the top of the inning to lead 5-2.
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) drove in a run with a triple in the second and Baca singled home
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) to account for the Roadrunners runs.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 2 p.m.
