Box Score 2 DENVER - Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) went 4-for-4 and
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) provided a three-run home run in Game 1 as Metropolitan State University of Denver split a doubleheader on Sunday with Colorado School of Mines, winning 8-6 before falling 7-2. The Roadrunners are now 22-16 overall and 17-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mines is 14-21 and 9-19.
For Comito, the four hits were a career high and he also scored two runs and drove in another.
Donaldson ripped a two-run double in the first inning to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead after the first. With the game tied 2-2, Comito and
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) each had RBI singles for a 4-2 lead and the Roadrunners never trailed again.
Thurston provided some insurance during a four-run sixth inning, hitting his fourth home run of the season over the left-field wall.
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs in five innings, while striking out a career-high eight.
In Game 2,
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled home Levett in the first inning to tie the game, but it was all Orediggers after that. Thurston drove in Comito with a two-out double in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Freshman phenom
Julian Garcia (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) had his hot streak snapped as he surrendered seven runs (six earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He entered the game with a 2-0 record and 1.89 ERA over his previous three starts.
Cameron Stroup (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) struck out four in 2 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
MSU Denver will host No. 2/1 Colorado Mesa next weekend in the final homestand of the year.
