DENVER - Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) combined for eight hits and 10 runs batted in as No. 23 Metropolitan State University of Denver split a doubleheader at Regis University on Monday, winning 9-0 in five innings before an 11-10 setback in nine innings. The Roadrunners are now 33-11 overall, including 24-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis is 26-16 and 21-10.
The Roadrunners enter the final weekend of the regular season tied with Colorado Mesa for first place in the conference. Both teams have a conference winning percentage of .800 and will play two games at Chadron State and two games against each other in a three-team pod in Chadron, Nebraska, next weekend.
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in Game 1 and Oury and Towner each had two hits and three RBIs to lead the offense. Oury and Towner also both homered in the first game. Towner's two-run blast in the fifth helped break open four-run inning to put the game out of reach for the Rangers.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) tossed a two-hit shutout, walking none and striking out two.
The second game was all Roadrunners early on as their bats stayed hot. The finished with 12 hits after totaling 13 in the first game, and held a 6-1 lead after four innings. But the Rangers tied it up with five in the bottom of the fifth.
An RBI double by Towner and infield single by
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) put MSU Denver back in front 8-6 in the top of the sixth. That score remained until Regis scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Again, the Roadrunners pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles by
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) and Redmond, but Regis scored three times in the bottom of the inning to win the game on a walk-off error.
MSU Denver will host Northern Colorado for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before wrapping up the regular season in Nebraska this weekend.
