DENVER - No. 18 Metropolitan State University of Denver earned two wins on Friday to advance to the final day of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The Roadrunners defeated Colorado Mesa 5-0 and Western New Mexico 6-5. They will need to win three games on Saturday to win the championship. MSU Denver will face Adams State at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship and needing to defeat Regis University twice.
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) threw a complete-game shutout against CMU, scattering five hits and one walk over seven innings.
The Roadrunners scored all five of their runs in the second inning with two outs as
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.),
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.),
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.),
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) all hit consecutive singles.
Redmond finished 3-for-3.
In Game 2 vs. WNMU, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) hit a two-run home run and
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) hit a solo shot in the first inning. MSU Denver added two unearned runs in the second.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) did not allow an earned run through six innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
The Mustangs, trailing 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, loaded the bases with nobody out.
Nicole Larsen (Murrieta, Calif./Bloomington H.S.) came on in relief and escaped the jam, stranding the tying run on third base to end the game. She earned her fourth save of the season, a school record.
