DENVER - No. 18 Metropolitan State University of Denver lost 1-0 to Regis University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship game after reaching the final game with a 3-2 win over Adams State on Saturday. The Roadrunners dropped to 42-14 overall this season, while Regis improved to 31-17 and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Roadrunners will likely also receive an at-large bid. The tournament field will be announced at 8 a.m. on Monday morning.
Against ASU,
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) turned in a strong pitching performance, scattering seven hits and zero walks, while striking out six.
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) provided a solo home run in the third inning and
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) scored on a double by
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) later in the inning.
The lead stretched to 3-0 when
Chelsea Brew (Colorado Springs/Rampart H.S.) scored from second base on a fielder's choice by Espinoza. The Grizzlies scored twice in the fifth. Mattey shut down ASU in the seventh in order, including a pair of strikeouts.
The Roadrunners were stifled by Nicole Aviles against Regis as she held them to just three hits.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) nearly matched her, allowing just five hits and one run in six innings.
The Rangers scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single by Nicole Hull.
