Men's soccer: Labertew, Berg push Roadrunners past No. 24 Northeastern State

DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver scored two second-half goals to upset No. 24 Northeastern State (Okla.) 2-1 on Sunday at The Regency Athletic Complex. The Roadrunners improved to 2-1-1 overall and are now unbeaten in their last three games. NSU dropped to 2-2-0. It was the first win over a ranked opponent since a 1-0 win over then-No. 6 Regis University Sept. 21 last season.

MSU Denver had plenty of scoring chances in the first half, outshooting the RiverHawks 12-2 in the half.

Brock Labertew (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) finally opened the scoring in the 51st minute. MSU Denver was awarded an administrative free kick after NSU jumped to impede a throw-in. The ensuing free kick by Arturo Vega (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic H.S.) was headed by Tyler Trujillo (Denver, Colo./Mullen H.S.) in the center of the box to Labertew on the far post for the header goal.

Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) scored a penalty kick in the 77th minute after a handball was called on the RiverHawks.

NSU was given a penalty kick of its own in the 88th minute after a foul and yellow card in the box, giving Joseph Garcia his first goal of the year for NSU.

Hayden Rus (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) made three saves for MSU Denver, which outshot Northeastern State 24-12 in the game.

MSU Denver will open the conference season on Friday at new Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member Westminster (Utah) at 5 p.m.
