GUNNISON, Colo. - Sam Braun scored the game's only goal in the second half as Western State upset No. 22 Metropolitan State University of Denver 1-0 in Gunnison, Colorado, on Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSCU improved to 3-1-1 and 1-0.
It was the first loss in seven games in school history to the Mountaineers, who revived their women's soccer program in 2012 after disbanding in the 1980s.
Braun headed in a rebound after Sadie Stark's shot hit the post in the 65th minute.
MSU Denver had plenty of opportunitites, attempting 22 shots, including 12 on goal. Freshman
Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) had a team-high seven shot attempts and
Elise Boisnard (Denver, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.), who transferred from WSCU, attempted six.
Breanna Flores (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) stopped five shots in goal for the Roadrunners.
They will continue their road trip at UCCS on Sunday.
