GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) and
Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) both scored as Metropolitan State University of Denver earned a 2-0 win at Colorado Mesa on Sunday. The Roadrunners won their third straight game to improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CMU dropped to 3-2-1 and 0-1-0 in the RMAC.
It was the first win for the Roadrunners at CMU in Grand Junction since 2011 and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Mavericks overall. CMU reached the national semifinals last season.
Gillis scored in the 22nd minute off a corner kick by
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) for a first-half lead.
Arrubla earned his second assist of the game in the 68th minute when Berg scored on a shot from 25 yards out.into the lower-left corner of the net. Berg now has five goals this season.
Hayden Rus (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) stopped the only two shots the Mavericks put on goal to earn his first career shutout. The two teams had five shot attempts each in the game.
MSU Denver will return home to host Colorado School of Mines on Friday at 7 p.m.
