DURANGO, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver earned its second straight road sweep, topping Fort Lewis 25-18, 26-24, 25-18 in Durango, Colorado, on Saturday evening. MSU Denver improved to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC fell to 3-9 and 0-4.
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) carried the offense as she had 31 set assists and five kills, while adding 11 digs defensively.
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) and
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) each finished with a match-high nine kills, while
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) added eight.
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had 12 digs and
Summer Greager (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian H.S.) matched Torr with 11. Their strong defensive efforts held the Skyhawks to a .063 hitting percentage.
MSU Denver led 20-18 in the first set before scoring the final five points to pull away as the defense forced three hitting errors aided by two blocks.
The Skyhawks fought off set point three times in the second set before the Roadrunners forced two more attack errors to take the set 26-24, holding FLC to a .024 hitting percentage in the set.
MSU Denver jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the third before letting FLC back into the set. The Roadrunners recovered with a pair of kills by Smith as they scored the final three points.
The Roadrunners will play at Regis University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
