DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver hit .255 to earn a 25-16, 25-20, 11-25, 25-23 win at crosstown rival Regis University on Wednesday night. The non-conference battle improved the Roadrunners to 6-8 overall, while Regis fell to 6-7.
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) led the strong offensive night with 46 assists, while providing 12 digs on defense. She also had four kills.
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had a match-high 17 kills, hitting .300 for MSU Denver.
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) had 10 kills and hit .364.
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) put down nine kills and
Stephanie Laraway (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) had eight as both players hit over .300 as well. Laraway led the team at the net with five blocks.
Defensively,
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had a team-high 19 digs, followed by Torr's 12 and
Jackie Lopez (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) with 10. The Roadrunners surrendered just one service ace all night on defense.
MSU Denver hit .455 in the dominating first set. The Roadrunners stretched a 10-6 lead to 14-6 after two kills and two blocks.
The Roadrunners jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set. Things fell off for MSU Denver in the third as Regis held the Roadrunners to a .037 hitting percentage, while hitting .452 on offense.
MSU Denver recovered in the fourth to hold Regis to a .182 hitting percentage and again jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Smith had six kills in the fourth.
MSU Denver will host South Dakota Mines on Friday at 7 p.m.
