Durango, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team was defeated 63-55 by Fort Lewis on Saturday night. The Roadrunners fall to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC while Fort Lewis moves to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.). Stipanovich had 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomores
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) and
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) were each in double-figure scoring with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
MSU Denver fell behind early in the contest with Fort Lewis scoring the first six points of the game. Junior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) started the Roadrunners scoring when she hit a three-point basket with 5:46 to play in the first quarter. MSU Denver would trail 13-9 at the end of the period.
The second quarter would see MSU Denver go on a 9-0 run to take the lead 20-18 with 3:51 to go. Stipanovich would score seven of the Roadrunners 15 points in the quarter. MSU Denver took a 24-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Roadrunners struggled to find their offensive rhythm to start the third quarter. MSU Denver missed its first nine field goals to start the half until Paine knocked down a three-point basket with 2:59 left. The Roadrunners would trail 43-33 entering the fourth quarter.
MSU Denver would use an 8-0 run in the fourth sparked by Stipanovich and Squires-Horton to cut the Fort Lewis lead to 50-47 with 5:25 to play. Fort Lewis would respond with a 7-0 run of its own. MSU Denver would score 22 in the final period.
MSU Denver will face Colorado Mesa next at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 8 at the Auraria Event Center.
