Spearfish, S.D. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell 67-64 to Black Hills State on Friday night. The Roadrunners drop to 7-11 overall and 5-7 in the RMAC while Black Hills State improves to 13-3 overall and 10-2 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.). Hartegan scored 18 points in the contest. Freshman
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) added 14 points and sophomore
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) was the only other Roadrunner in double-figures with 11 points.
MSU Denver went on an 11-0 run to close the first quarter. The Roadrunners held Black Hills State without a field goal for the final five minutes of the quarter. MSU Denver led after the first period 20-13.
The Roadrunners would hit a scoring slump in the second quarter. Hartegan would score six of the team's eight points in the period. MSU Denver would trail at the half 33-28.
The second half would begin with the Roadrunners unable to make a field goal until Smith hit a layup with 4:01 remaining. MSU Denver would trail by as many as 14 points in the quarter. MSU Denver would finish the third quarter down, 49-41.
MSU Denver would battle back and take a 55-53 lead with 5:39 to play following a Smith layup. Hartegan would make a layup to extend the Roadrunners lead to 62-58 with 2:08 to play. The Roadrunners would hold a one-point lead at 64-63 before being outscored 4-0 over the final 40 seconds.
MSU Denver will face S.D. School of Mines on Saturday, January 23 in Rapid City, S.D. at 3:30 p.m.
