Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Westminster College 68-61 Saturday night at the Auraria Event Center. MSU Denver improved to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in conference while the Griffins fell to 8-5 overall and 4-5 in conference.
The Roadrunners were led by sophomore Peter Moller who scored 22 points and had four rebounds.
It was a slow start for the Roadrunners, but once they got going in the first half it was hard to stop them. MSU Denver went on a 21-6 run in the final 8:29, allowing Westminster to score only two three-pointers. Moller hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to go up 30-29 before going into the break. Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) added five rebounds. Freshman Enrique Cortes Zotes contributed eight points and four steals.
The second half was back-and-forth between the two sides. There would be eight lead changes in the second half alone. MSU Denver would score 18 points inside the paint in the second and would score 21 points off the 12 turnovers for the night. Junior
Andre Harris (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb H.S.) would add 15 points and seven rebounds to the Roadrunners total.
The Griffins were led by Zerrion Payton who scored 12 points.
MSU Denver will play Colorado Christian on Friday, January 15 at 7 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
