Las Vegas, N.M.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team (14-3, 9-0 RMAC) remained undefeated in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after coming back to defeat New Mexico Highlands (5-9, 2-7 RMAC) in five sets on Friday, October 14.
The Roadrunners found themselves in unfamiliar territory after two sets, trailing 2-0 to Highlands. The Cowgirls took the first set 25-22 with a .387 hitting percentage, and followed up with another win in the second set 25-20. Highlands held the Roadrunners to a .212 hitting percentage to their .314.
MSU Denver fought back in the third set to stay alive, winning 25-18, with an outstanding .560 hitting percentage and 16 kills to the Cowgirls nine. The Roadrunners were able to force a fifth set after picking up the 25-20 victory in the fourth, and went on to complete the comback win with authority in the final set 15-8.
Junior
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 17 kills, just one ahead of senior
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.).
Alyssa Kelling (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) recorded six blocks in the match; while senior
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) tallied 54 assists. Junior defensive specialist
Jackie Lopez (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) finished the night with 27 digs in the MSU Denver win.
The Roadrunners return to action at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday, October 15 at 7 p.m. for another RMAC matchup.
