Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's volleyball team beat No. 22 Colorado School of Mines 3-1. The Roadrunners improved to 17-3 overall and 12-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers fell to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in the RMAC.
MSU Denver dropped the first set in a close 25-23 battle. The Roadrunners played catch up most of the set being down by as many as five points. A kill by senior
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) led a rally to tie the third set at 23 a piece. However, the Roadrunners were unable to finish the set. Senior
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) led both sides with six kills in the first set.
The Roadrunners battled back to take the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-17. In the second set redshirt freshman
Alyssa Kelling (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) led MSU Denver to a great start with an early kill. The Roadrunners would go on to score five straight points to give them a 5-0 lead and would keep the lead the rest of the set. In the third set the Roadrunners dominated, never trailing and leading by as many as eight points. Smith and Sophomore
Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 4 kills a piece in the set.
The Roadrunners took the match, winning the fourth set 28-26. Smith finished the night leading both squads with 18 kills followed by Orediggers LaRose Currie with 16. Junior
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) added 16 kills for Roadrunners and Sturges provided 13. Torr finished the night with a game high 45 assists.
No.23 MSU Denver take on Colorado Christian for "Dig Pink" night in honor of Breast Cancer awareness Saturday, October 22 at 5 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
