Golden- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (12-6-1, 9-4-1 RMAC) defeated Colorado School of Mines (10-6-3, 9-3-2 RMAC) 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference quarterfinal match.
The first half was a physical battle between the two sides with both teams exchanging chances in front of goal. Colorado Mines received a red card to put them a man down with 16 minutes left to go in the first half. However, the Orediggers were the first to score with just over two minutes remaining in the first half when John Haist received a breakaway pass on the right flank where he was able to finish in the bottom left corner of the net. The Roadrunners had the edge on shots on goal going into the second half 5-2.
The Roadrunners came out on fire in the second half, immediately putting the Orediggers under defensive pressure. Senior
Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) tied the game at one ten minutes into the second half receiving a pass from freshman
D'Angelo Escobar (Firestone, Colo./Thornton High School ) inside the box where he was able to rip a shot past the Colorado Mines goal keeper. MSU Denver continued to pressure the Colorado Mines defense but the scored remained tied sending the game into overtime.
It didn't take long for Gillis to connect for his second goal of the game, scoring a minute and 11 seconds into the first overtime. The game-winner was Gillis' sixth goal of the season and third game-winning goal.
MSU Denver will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on the number one seed, Colorado Mesa in the semifinal of the RMAC tournament. The game will take place on Friday, November 4 at 4 p.m.
