Grand Junction, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's soccer team (8-5-4, 6-4-2 RMAC) defeated Colorado Mesa (9-7-2, 7-4-1 RMAC) 1-0 in overtime in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference quarterfinal game.
The first half proved to be a back and forth battle between the two sides. The half was scoreless with each side getting three shots on net.
The Mavericks put pressure on early in the second half getting a few chances in the Roadrunner defensive half. MSU Denver had a great corner kick chance off the head of Senior
Alexie Marr (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) in the 53
rd minute. The ball just missed the goal, hitting off the post. The Mavericks also saw a quality chance hitting the cross bar in the 58
th minute. Both teams had several more chances in the half but neither side was able to finish, ending regulation 0-0.
Senior Alexi Marr scored the game winning goal just under five minutes into the first overtime off a corner kick deflection. The game winner was Marr's second goal of the season. The Roadrunners out shot the Mavericks 5-4 and had the edge on corner kicks 8-1.
The Roadrunners will travel to take on the number one seed, Colorado Mines Friday, November 6 at 4 p.m. in Golden.
