Men's Basketball: Roadrunners Come Up Short Against No. 6 Northwest Missouri State

Sunday Dech's double-double not enough to overcome the Bearcats

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team (2-2) fell to No. 6 Northwest Missouri State 66-64 on Sunday, November 20 at the Auraria Event Center.

MSU Denver got out to an early lead against the nationally ranked Bearcats and held it for 11-plus minutes of the first half with their largest lead being five. The Roadrunners outrebounded NW Missouri State 20-14 in the first half en route to a 32-31 half time lead.

Senior Andre Harris (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb H.S.) led the Roadrunners with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field along with three rebounds. Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) also played a vital role in the first half with eight points and seven rebounds. The Roadrunners took advantage of second chance points over the Bearcats 9-2.

Northwest Missouri State looked like a different team in the second half, outscoring MSU Denver 19-9 in the first eight minutes of the half.  MSU Denver battled back to cut down the Bearcat lead to 51-46 fueled by junior Peter Moller who had recorded 12 points with 9 minutes remaining in the game.

The Roadrunners battled back to take a 58-57 lead off two Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) free throws with 3:32 remaining in the game. The two teams went back and forth exchanging leads with the Bearcats pulling ahead with a pair of free throws with 19.5 seconds remaining.

Junior Cam Williams was fouled with five seconds remaining but was unable to convert either of the two free throws. After a quick foul, the Bearcats hit one of two from the line. A last second half court shot from Enrique Cortes-Zotes came up just short as the Roadrunners fell 66-64.

Moller led with 17 points and Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

MSU Denver will return to the Auraria Event Center next weekend for the Hilton Garden Inn Denver Cherry Creek Classic. The Roadrunners will open up play against Davis & Elkins on Friday, November 25.
