Fairbanks, Alaska- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team (3-3) fell to Newman University (5-2) Friday, November 25 in the second game of the MT McKinley Bank North Star Invitational.
The Roadrunners trailed for most of the first half however, the team never trailed by more than seven points in the half. MSU Denver trailed 14-9 to end the first quarter. Newman kept the lead heading into half having the edge 28-23. The Roadrunners shot 8-9 from the line in the first half. Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) led both teams with 14 first half points .
The Jets came out strong in in the second half keeping the Roadrunners to just 11 third quarter points and taking the largest lead of the game going into the fourth quarter with the score 34-44 in favor of Newman.
Newman kept the momentum going through most of the fourth quarter, but the Roadrunners were able to fight back going on an 11-0 run to cut the Jets lead to two with under a minute to play in the game. MSU Denver had a chance down by two with 25 seconds left, but was unable to convert. After a made Newman free throw the Jets were able to take the game 57-53.
Smith ended the game with 16 points and five rebounds. Junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds.
MSU Denver take on Alaska Fairbanks in the final game of the Invitational tomorrow at 3 P.M. AT.
