Chadron, Neb.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team (8-2, 4-0 RMAC) defeated Chadron State 71-62 (1-7, 1-3 RMAC) Saturday evening to remain undefeated in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The first half proved to be a battle between the two sides with each side leading by no more than four points the first 15 minutes of the half . The Roadrunners largest run was five minutes into the half when junior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Neb./South High School ) scored a three pointer to put the team up by four. The game remained close until a made three pointer started an 8-0 run for the Eagles, giving them a nine-point lead, the largest of the half.
MSU Denver cut the lead to two with just over two minutes to go in the half after converting several free throws while in the bonus. After a 7-0 run the Roadrunners tied the game at 29 with 51 seconds to go in the first half. The score remained tied at 31 going into halftime. The Roadrunners were led by by Williams with 12 first half points. Junior
Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) and Senior
Andre Harris (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb H.S.) both finished the half with six points.
Chadron State got the second half going with a made three pointer in the teams first possession. The Roadrunners regained the lead a minute later 37-36 after a made lay up by junior Peter Moller.
The game remained tight for most of the half, with neither team leading by more than three points. A made free-throw from Williams led to a series of Roadrunner fortune, with the team going on a 7-0 run and giving the Roadrunners their largest lead of the half at 63-56.
After an Eagle timeout Warren Gordon scored a three pointer to cut the MSU Denver lead to four, however the Roadrunners were able to keep the lead and secure the win 71-62.
Williams finished with 21 points shooting 50 percent from the field. He added six rebounds, and four steals. Dech helped the Roadrunners with 17 points, 7 boards, and four steals. Sophomore Enrique Cortes Zotes led both teams with 10 rebounds. The Roadrunners out rebounded the Eagles 39-22.
MSU Denver will host Colorado School of Mines on Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m.
