Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell 59-57 to Colorado School of Mines on Friday night. The Roadrunners fall to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
MSU Denver found itself trailing 13-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners faced a 31-27 deficit at halftime. The Orediggers extended the lead to 45-39 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter would prove to be the Roadrunners best.
The Roadrunners were down seven with 4:19 to play in the game.
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) hit a three-point basket with 2:44 to play to cut the lead to four, 55-51. After trading free throws,
Bree Wellington (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan High School) reduced the Oredigger lead to two on a layup with 1:16 to play. Colorado School of Mines added a free throw before Squires-Horton knocked down a three to tie the game at 57-57 with 11 seconds to play. However, Colorado Mines would hit its first basket from the field in over four minutes with under a second to play. MSU Denver would be unable to get a final shot off prior to the buzzer sounding.
Squires Horton led the Roadrunners in scoring with 19 points and
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) added 18 points. Smith added 13 rebounds to notch a double-double with
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) grabbed 10 boards of her own.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday, December 17 to take on Colorado Christian. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
