Denver, Colorado- Metropolitan State University of Denver (5-3, 2-0 RMAC) and Black Hills State University (0-5, 0-1 RMAC) women's basketball tipped off Saturday, December 3 at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners beat the Yellow Jackets 66-52.
In the first quarter, the Roadrunner's defense held Black Hills to 18.3 shooting percentage. MSU Denver went on a 13-0 run and headed into the second quarter 16-4.
Black Hills State did not reach double digits until halfway through the second quarter, as the Roadrunners persisted on defense. Junior J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) went 5-7 from the three-point line, putting the Roadrunners ahead 21 at the half.
MSU Denver continued to lead throughout the second half pushing their lead to 30 at one point. Senior Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.), junior J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) and sophomore Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) all finished the game in double digits. Â Raquel Torres (Vallejo, Calif./Jesse Bethel H.S.) helped seal the win with a perfect six for six from the free throw line. The Roadrunners had 13 points off turnovers, 15 second chance points, and 25 points from the bench.
MSU Denver opens their RMAC road schedule on Friday, December 9th against cross town rival, Regis at 5 p.m.
