Men’s Basketball: Strong Offense Leads to Roadrunner Win Over Mavericks

Williams scores a season high, Dech produces double-double

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team (9-4, 5-2 RMAC) defeated Colorado Mesa (2-11, 1-6 RMAC) 98-89 on Friday night.
 
Both sides opened up scoring a three pointer within the first minute of the game. The Mavericks would then go on a 7-0 run to take lead by four, however, the Roadrunners answered back immediately after, going on an 8-0 run with junior Peter Moller having four of the eight to give the Roadrunners a four-point lead.
 
MSU Denver was able to keep the lead for the following six minutes until the Mavericks were able to go on a 10-0 run to take the lead at 24-22.  The Roadrunners scored four three-points in the last five minutes of the quarter, Junior Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) and Moller each having two.  A dunk by junior Cameron Williams (Omaha, Neb./South High School ) would give the Roadrunners the largest lead of the half at 49-36.
 
MSU Denver led Colorado Mesa 51-39 to go into the second half. Williams led all scorers with 21 first half points. Dech and Moller both added 12 points for the Roadrunners with Dech led both teams with seven rebounds. MSU Denver out rebounded Colorado Mesa 19-12 in the first half. The Roadrunners shot 58 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arch.
 
The Roadrunners maintained the lead and in control of the game through the second half leading by as many as 18 at one point. The Mavericks fought to come back going on two different 8-0 runs with under ten minutes to go. CMU cut the lead to six with 56 seconds to go but the Roadrunner were able to keep the lead and earn the victory 98-89.
 
The Roadrunners were led by Williams who had a season high 37 points and eight rebounds. Dech ended the game earning his third double-double of the season with 24 points and 14 points. Moller added 20 points in the Roadrunner win. The Roadrunners shot 56 from the three point line and out rebounded the Mavericks 45-35.

MSU Denver returns home at next Friday, January 6 to take on Fort Lewis at 7 p.m.
