Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Regis 75-55. The Roadrunners advance their record to 15-9 overall and 13-5 in the RMAC while Regis falls to 8-16 overall and 6-12 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by freshman
Enrique Cortés Zotes (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Litoral) with 17. Sophomore Peter Moller was also in double-figure scoring with 13. Sophomore
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) led the team in rebounds with nine.
The game remained tight throughout the first half. MSU Denver built a 22-15 lead with 8:36 to go in the half following a 6-0 run and capped by two free throws from Keita. Regis would cut the lead to two, however, MSU Denver would respond a take a nine point lead with 1:11 to go after Cortés Zotes sank a three-point basket. Regis hit a three-point basket of its own to make the score 35-29 in favor of the Roadrunners at the half.
The Roadrunners defense would step up its game in the second half. MSU Denver would allow only two field goals over the first ten minutes of the second half. Senior
Tony Dobbinson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill H.S.) hit a three-point basket at the 9:49 mark to give MSU Denver a 59-38 lead. The Roadrunners led by as many as 27 in the second half after senior
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) made a layup with 2:57 to play.
MSU Denver will travel to Chadron, Neb. on Saturday, February 13 to face Chadron State. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
