Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team held on to win against Regis Friday 71-70. The Roadrunners move to 11-13 overall and 9-9 in the RMAC whil Regis falls to 15-9 overall and 13-5 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) with 19 points. Sophomores
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) and
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) added 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ohrdorf was also the team's leading rebounder with seven.
MSU Denver would trail all of the first quarter. Regis would lead by as many as five in the period. The Roadrunners would be able to trim the lead to one at the 1:54 mark in the first quarter following a Stipanovich layup. MSU Denver would trail 22-20 at the end of the quarter.
The second period belonged to the Roadrunners. Regis sank a three-point basket eight seconds into the quarter and then was outscored 16-0 over the next eight minutes. MSU Denver was able to hold Regis to only one field goal in the entire second quarter. The Roadrunners led 38-29 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Roadrunners would lead by as many as 17 following a Stipanovich layup with 3:03 to go in the period. Regis finished the quarter on a 7-2 run. MSU Denver held a 57-44 lead entering the final quarter.
MSU Denver held a 67-57 lead in the fourth quarter after Ohrdorf made a layup with 2:43 to play. Regis would go on a 9-0 run and cut the Roadrunners lead to one at 67-66 with 44 seconds to go. Ohrdorf would sink four critical free throws over the final 36 seconds. Regis would have the ball in the final seconds, but was unable to get a shot off.
The Roadrunners will continue their road trip and play Chadron State in Chadron, Neb. on Saturday, February 13. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
