Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated Emporia State 6-5 on Sunday afternoon. Â The Roadrunners advance to 1-2 overall while the Hornets fall to 4-2.
The Roadrunners were led by junior
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) who smacked a grand slam in the second inning. Junior
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) went 3-for-4 on the day scoring one run. Sophomore
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) went 1-for-3 in the game and scoring a run and driving in another.
MSU Denver was able to get off to a fast start scoring in the first inning when sophomore
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) singled to score senior
Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.).
In the second inning, with the bases loaded, Maloney would walk to score junior
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.). Paust would hit his grand slam and the Roadrunners took a 6-0 lead.
Emporia State would mount a comeback in the late innings, but Maloney strike out the final batter with a runner on third base to cement the Roadrunners victory.
Sophomore
Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) started the game and for the Roadrunners. Vega pitched seven innings allowing only one run on six hits. Vega also tallied along with seven strike outs in the game.
The Roadrunners will be back in action Friday, February 19, at the Regency Athletic Complex against MSU-Billings. Â Game time it set for 12 noon.
