Softball: Roadrunners Come Up Short In Two Games In Texas

MSU Denver fell to St. Mary’s (Texas) 12-6 and West Texas A&M 12-5.

Canyon, Texas - The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team lost two games at the West Texas A&M Invitation on Sunday.  The Roadrunners fall to 3-7 overall on the season with the losses.

In the first game, the Roadrunners fell to St. Mary's (Texas) 12-6.  MSU Denver started strong, scoring four runs in the first two innings.  The Roadrunners were led by junior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) who scored two runs, had two hits, and drove in one run.  Junior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) aided the cause scoring one run and tallying two hits of her own.  She also drove in one run.

Fields was also the starting pitcher for the Roadrunners against St. Mary's.  She pitched five innings giving up eight runs, six of which were earned, on 10 hits.  Senior Kailey Christenson pitched the last two innings for the Roadrunners, giving up four runs, three earned, on three hits.

MSU Denver was unable to take advantage with timely hitting leaving eight runners on base to the Rattlers four.

In the second game of the day, the Roadrunners fell to No. 22 West Texas A&M 12-5.  After going down 2-0 in the second inning, MSU Denver scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead.  Fields knocked in junior Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) with a double to center field to get MSU Denver on the scoreboard, before sophomore Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) lined a single up the middle to drive in Fields and freshman pinch-runner Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.), giving MSU Denver the 3-2 lead.

In the fifth inning Fields hit a solo homerun, adding another run to MSU Denver's lead and notching her second run and second RBI of the game.  In the sixth inning, Bakovich also hit a solo homerun, extending the Roadrunner's lead to 5-2.

MSU Denver could not hold the three-run lead, and gave up 10 runs in the sixth inning.

The Roadrunners will host their home opener on Saturday, February 20.  MSU Denver will face Adams State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon at The Regency Athletic Complex.
