Pueblo, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team won two games on Sunday afternoon against Chadron State and CSU-Pueblo. The Roadrunners now hold a record of 16-10 overall and 13-3 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners defeated Chadron State 2-0 in the first game of the day. Junior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) threw a complete-game shutout for MSU Denver. Smith allowed only four hits, struck out four batters, and did not walk a single batter. Smith also drove in the Roadrunners two runs on the day. In the bottom of the second inning, following a walk by sophomore
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) and a single by sophomore
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.), Smith hit a double to right field scoring both. The two runs would be all the Roadrunners needed to pick up the victory.
In the second game of the day, MSU Denver defeated CSU-Pueblo 11-7. The Roadrunners were able to build an early lead in the game. In the top of the second inning, sophomore
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) hit a double to center field to score Terry. Freshman
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) then hit a single to score Anderson and the Roadrunners took a 2-0 lead.
MSU Denver was able to put up four more runs in the top of the third inning. Espinoza hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.). Terry hit a single to left field that scored junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.). Freshman
Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.) laid down a bunt that scored Terry. Finally, Kim would reach on an error by the shortstop and Anderson would score to make the Roadrunners lead 6-0.
CSU-Pueblo responded in the bottom of the of the third inning scoring three runs of its own to cut the lead to 6-3. The Roadrunners added a run in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) drove in Smith. CSU-Pueblo hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning and Roadrunners held a 7-6 lead.
The Roadrunners were able to expand on their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Terry drove in both Fields and Lovas on a hit to center field. Anderson tallied her second RBI of the game when she singled to left field to score junior
Liberty Nelson (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) making the score 10-6.
In the top of the seventh inning, MSU Denver added an additional run when Kim scored on a single by junior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.). The Roadrunners would load the bases with two outs, but could not add any additional runs. CSU-Pueblo was able to put up a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough.
The Roadrunners totaled 17 hits in the game with a .500 batting average.
MSU Denver will return home to take on Fort Hays State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 15. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at The Regency Athletic Complex.
