Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team split a doubleheader with Colorado Christian on Monday falling in game one 9-7 and winning game two 9-7. The Roadrunners move to 9-13 overall and 5-7 in the RMAC.
In game one, Colorado Christian started the scoring in the second inning with four runs. The Roadrunners got their first two runs in the third inning off of a single by sophomore
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) that scored seniors
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) and
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.). The Roadrunners added two more runs in the fourth inning off the bats of Walker and Comito. In the top of the fifth inning, Colorado Christian added one more run to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Cougars. In the bottom of the fifth, the scoring continued for the Roadrunners when senior
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) scored on sophomore
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.)'s single and Maloney scored on a single from sophomore
Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) to take a 6-5 lead. The Cougars retook the lead in the sixth inning when they scored three runs. Walker knocked in Donaldson in the seventh inning for MSU Denver's final run of the game. The Cougars were able to get one more insurance run in the ninth inning to give them a two-run edge over the Roadrunners. Junior
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) took the loss in game one.
Colorado Christian started the scoring once again in the second game of the doubleheader. The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Roadrunners answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first when Comito and Levett scored off a single from senior
Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.). Colorado Christian scored four more in the third inning to take a 7-2 lead. MSU Denver would score seven unanswered runs in the next two innings. Three runs scored off of a pair of singles from junior
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) and Walker. In the fourth inning Paust singled scoring Comito, junior Nick McCaskey doubled scoring O'Donnell and Paust, and McCaskey scored on a Cougar error. O'Donnell pitched 3.1 innings for the Roadrunners. He struck out two and allowed no runs. Paust came in during the seventh inning to record his first save on the season.
MSU Denver will return to action on March 24-26 to take on CSU-Pueblo. First pitch on Thursday, March 24 is slated for 6 p.m. at The Regency Athletic Complex.
