Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against UCCS on Friday. The Roadrunners fall to 26-16 overall on the season and 21-9 in RMAC play.
In the first game, the Roadrunners fell to UCCS 3-1. Sophomore Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) scored the lone run for MSU Denver with a home run in the second inning. The Roadrunners did not tally another hit until the seventh inning when sophomore Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) reached first base on a pitching error by UCCS. Freshman Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.) pinch ran for Espinoza and was thrown out at home after a single hit by junior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.). Junior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) was the starting pitcher for the Roadrunners. She struck out two giving up three earned runs on six hits in the loss.
During the second game, MSU Denver started strong with two hits by junior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Espinoza, but could not convert hits to runs scored. Junior Liberty Nelson (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) singled to right field to start off the third inning. Espinoza hit her second single of the game during the fourth inning and was followed up by sophomore Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.)'s hit to right field. After a UCCS pitching change in the fifth, Bakovich hit her second single of the game and stole second base but the Roadrunners were unable to score a run and the game stood at 0-0. UCCS hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 1-0. Fields took the loss in game two for the Roadrunners striking out three and giving up one earned run on four hits.
MSU Denver will continue the series against UCCS in Colorado Springs on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
