Greeley, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday to move to 27-17 overall.
The Roadrunners won game one 11-7. MSU Denver was able to jump out to 2-0 lead in the top of the second after the junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) and freshman
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) each drove in a single run. Northern Colorado hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Roadrunners scored the next nine runs in the game. Junior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) drove in three runs while Fields, sophomore
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.), and sophomore
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) each drove in two runs. MSU Denver held a 11-3 lead after the top of the sixth inning. Northern Colorado added four runs to end the game, but it would be too little, too late.
In the second game, MSU Denver fell 19-7. MSU Denver jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) drove in the first run of the game followed by Terry being hit by a pitch to score the second run. Freshman
Daisy Collins (Visalia, Calif./Redwood H.S.) hit a single that drove in the final two runs of the inning. Northern Colorado exploded offensively. In both the bottom of the first inning and the second inning, Northern Colorado put up eight runs. In the top of the third inning, Fields and freshman
Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.) each drove in a run to trim the Northern Colorado lead to 16-6. Northern Colorado added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fourth inning, Espinoza would drive in another run.  The Roadrunners trailed 18-7 in the middle of the fourth inning. Northern Colorado added another run in the bottom of the fourth. MSU Denver would be unable to score in the top of the fifth inning and the game would end at that point.
MSU Denver will travel to Spearfish, S.D. on April 22-23 to take on Black Hills State and Colorado Mesa in two games each.
