Volleyball: Roadrunners Sweep First RMAC Road Trip of 2016

MSU Denver goes onto win each set over the weekend

Durango, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team remained perfect in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after a 3-0 win over Fort Lewis on Saturday, September 24. The Roadrunners improve to 9-3 overall & 4-0 in conference play while handing the Skyhawks (3-9 overall, 2-2 RMAC) their second conference loss. MSU Denver has now won five straight matches and completed the weekend without losing a set.

Seniors Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) and Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) helped the Roadrunners hold off a late rally by the Skyhawks in the first set, winning 27-25. Torr provided 13 assists while Smith tallied seven kills and six digs. Sophomore Santashia Sturges also got involved with seven kills and a serving ace.

Fort Lewis started off the second set strong but the Roadrunner were able to fight back after a slow start to take the second set 25-18. Smith led the way with another eight kills in the set while Torr had already recorded a double-double by the end of two sets.

MSU Denver continued their dominance in the third set 25-19 to take the match 3-0, to conclude an excellent weekend. Torr finished the day with 39 assists and 13 digs. Smith with finished with a .200 hitting percentage of on 19 kills. Junior Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) added 9 kills in the match. The Roadrunners limited the Skyhawks to a .100 hitting percentage in the victory.

The Roadrunners will next host CSU-Pueblo on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m. followed by New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, October 1 at 5 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
