Volleyball: Roadrunners Sweep Weekend To Start 4-0

MSU Denver starts new head coach Jenny Glenn's tenure with four wins in Oregon

Portland, Ore. - The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team completed an excellent weekend defeating both Missouri S&T and Western Oregon on Saturday, September 3 at the Concordia Labor Day Tournament.  MSU Denver is now 4-0 to start the season under first year head coach Jenny Glenn.
 
In the first match, MSU Denver topped Missouri S&T in four sets, 3-1.  The Roadrunners took the first set over the Miners 25-18.  MSU Denver would go on to pick up the second set as well by a score of 25-21. Missouri S&T fought back in the third set and edged out MSU Denver 26-24,  The Roadrunners finished the match in the fourth 25-21 to continue their winning ways.  Senior Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) led the way with 16 kills.  Senior Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) posted 13 kills and junior Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) added 11 kills.  The Roadrunners were stellar defensively with four players totaling double-digit digs.  Junior Jackie Lopez (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) tallied a team-high 23 digs.
 
In the final match of the weekend, the Roadrunners kept their momentum going defeating Western Oregon 3-1.  MSU Denver took the first set 25-22.  The Wolves fought back taking the second set 25-14 to even the match.  MSU Denver responded with authority taking the third set 25-9.  The Roadrunners completed their weekend by knocking off the Wolves 25-21 in the fourth set.  Hoerdemann and Fiatoa racked up 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Sophomore Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) notched 22 digs in the match.
 
MSU Denver will open its 2016 home schedule at the Colorado Premier Challenge on Friday, September 9 against No. 22 Angelo State at 3:30 p.m. and No. 9 Central Missouri at 7 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.  Bracket play will follow on Saturday, September 10.  The Roadrunners will salute all first responders as well as active military & veterans throughout the weekend with free admission to all matches of the tournament.
