Men’s Soccer: Roadrunners Down Dixie State

Beck Scores Two to Earn MSU Denver First Win of 2016

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team defeated Dixie State 2-1 on Sunday, September 4 at the Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver. The Roadrunners improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Trailblazers drop to 0-2.

MSU Denver had a number of opportunities early on, but wasn't able to find the back of the net. Senior Dustin Berg (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) nearly put the Roadrunners up early but saw his shot go off the right post.

Dixie State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 23 minutes remaining in the first half, when junior Sean Jenne scored a direct free kick. The Roadrunners quickly responded 12 minutes later on a corner kick taken by Senior Arturo Vega (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic H.S.), who found the head of sophomore Kevin Beck (Chandler, Ariz./Basha H.S.), scoring his first goal of the 2016 season.

MSU Denver would strike again with 8 minutes remaining in the half when Beck found the net for the second time via an assist from junior Luan Silva (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista High School) to put the Roadrunners ahead 2-1. MSU Denver finished the half out shooting Trailblazers 7-1, with five corner kicks.

Both teams exchanged chances in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Hayden Rus (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) turned away each Trailblazer attempt to keep the 2-1 lead for good earning their first win of 2016. MSU Denver finished the game outshooting Dixie State 10-3, and with the advantage in corners 8-4.

MSU Denver will take its first road trip of 2016 as they will travel to Western Washington on Thursday, September 8 at 4 p.m. PT followed by a game on Saturday, September 10 at Seattle Pacific at 4:30 p.m. PT.
