Las Vegas, N.M.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated New Mexico Highlands 72-58 on Saturday in its second road game of the weekend. The Roadrunners improved to 10-8 overall and 6-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Cowgirls fell to 2-13 overall and 1-11 in conference.
MSU Denver shot 55 percent from the field in the game and held New Mexico Highlands to 40 percent. The Roadrunners were led by junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) scoring a career high 28 points, going 6-8 from behind the arch and 9-12 from the field. Junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) added 20 points and five rebounds while Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) scored 12 points and had six rebounds and assists.
In the first quarter the Roadrunners shot 54 percent from the field while the Cowgirls shot 41 percent. The quarter remained tight until a three pointer by Squires-Horton propelled the Roadrunners to a 7-0 run extending the lead to 16-9 with under three minutes to go in the first. The Cowgirls were quick to answer back converting a three pointer and a free throw to cut the lead to 16-13 at the end of the quarter.
The Roadrunners opened the second quarter by going on an 8-1 run to extend the lead. MSU Denver was able to keep the lead throughout the rest of the quarter sending the game into halftime at 29-21. Squires-Horton led the Roadrunners with 11 first half points shooting 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arch.
Squires-Horton got the Roadrunners scoring underway in the second half adding another three pointer to score the first points of the half for the Roadrunners two minutes in. MSU Denver continued to lay on the offense extending the lead by as many as 13 in the quarter after a made three pointer by senior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.). Going into the fourth quarter the score remained in the Roadrunners favor 49-38.
MSU Denver broke through in the fourth quarter leading by as many as 18 and no less than 9 throughout. The Roadrunners earned the road win 72-58.
MSU Denver will travel to Grand Junction Friday, January 20 to take on the Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m.
