Women’s Basketball: MSU Denver Falls 77-65 to Colorado Mesa

Ohrdorf finishes with a double double

Grand Junction, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell to Colorado Mesa on Friday evening 77-65. The Roadrunners fell to 10-9 overall and 6-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mavericks improved to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in conference.
 
MSU Denver was led by Sophomore Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) with 21 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Junior Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) completed her fourth double double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Colorado Mesa was led by Bryanna Adams who led all scorers with 27 points. The Roadrunners shot 42 percent from the field in the game while the Mavericks shot 47 percent.
 
The Mavericks got the game going in the first few minutes going on an 11-2 run with Ohrdorf scoring the first bucket for the Roadrunners. Colorado Mesa continued to dominate the first quarter shooting 57 percent from the field and holding the Roadrunners to 25 percent. The Mavericks led 22-12 going into the second quarter.
 
Senior Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) gave a spark to the Roadrunners to start the second quarter draining a three in the first ten seconds of the quarter. However, the Mavericks answered by going on 13-2 run to extend their lead to 18.
 
MSU Denver rallied back with two minutes to go in the quarter going on a 11-3 run to cut the lead to 12. The scored was 45-33 going into half with the Roadrunners shooting 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arch. The Mavericks shot 56 percent from the field in the half. MSU Denver out rebounded Colorado Mesa 19-13 in the first half.
 
The Roadrunners came out of the gate strong in the second half with Ohrdorf sending her team on a 7-0 run early on, having all seven points and cutting the Mavericks lead to 7. The momentum carried on for MSU Denver sending the game into the fourth quarter with a score of 61-53 in favor of Colorado Mesa.
 
Despite a battle, the Mavericks were able to hold on to the lead through the fourth quarter and take the win 77-65.
 
MSU Denver will take on Western State tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Gunnison, Colo.
