Women’s Basketball: MSU Denver Holds on to Defeat Westminster

Ohrdorf led the Roadrunners in scoring

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated Westminster at home Friday. The Roadrunners improved to 13-9 overall and 9-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Griffins fell to 7-12 overall and 5-10 in conference play.
 
MSU Denver was led by junior Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Junior J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) added 16 points and Senior Luisa Tago (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.) ended the night with 12. The Roadrunners shot 49 percent from the field while holding the Griffins to 40 percent.
 
Senior Luisa Tago (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.) got the Roadrunners going scoring a three to start the game and sending her team on a 10-2 run to being the first quarter.  The Griffins fought back scoring the next seven to bring the score within 1.
 
However, the Roadrunners were quick to respond going on a 9-1 run to end the quarter at 19-10. Ohrdorf had 10 of the MSU Denver's 19.
 
MSU Denver broke away in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffins 23-8. The Roadrunners shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and 70 percent from behind the arch while holding Westminster to 30 percent from the field. Ohrdorf and Tago both had 12 first half points for the Roadrunners with Tago going 3-3 from three-point line.
 
The Griffins had the edge coming out of half time out shooting the Roadrunners 14-7 in the third quarter. J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) had five of MSU Denver's seven. Westminster went on a 10-0 run from 7:04 to 3:06. The Roadrunners still had a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter 32-49.
 
Each team exchanged buckets to begin the fourth quarter until Westminster continued its momentum to go on on 11-0 run to bring the score within eight with three minutes to go in the game.
 
Ohrdorf converted a three-point play to extend the Roadrunners lead to 11 and give a spark to her team with just over two minutes to go in the game.
 
The Griffins answered back by scoring two from downtown in a row to bring the game within five at 63-58 with 1:20 to go.
 
Two free-throws made by Squires-Horton extended MSU Denver's lead to seven with 30 seconds to go.
 
MSU Denver was able to gain the win 67-58.
 
The Roadrunners will travel to South Dakota next Friday, February 3 to take on Black Hills State at 5:30 p.m.
