Spearfish, S.D.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball defeated Black Hills State on the road on Friday, February 3. The Roadrunners improved to 14-9 overall and 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets fell to 8-13 overall and 8-9 in conference.
The Roadrunners were led by Junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) finishing with 22 points going 9-15 from the field. Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) finished the night with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) scored 14 for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver shot 53 percent in the game and held the Yellow Jackets to 39 percent. The Roadrunners out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 37-28 in the game.
The opening minutes went back and forth between the two sides. The Roadrunners took a four-point lead four minutes in, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 7 a piece.
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) scored one from downtown to steal the lead back for the Roadrunners at 10-7 with 3:47 to go in the first quarter. The Roadrunners were able to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the first quarter leading by at many as seven after a made three-pointer from senior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.).
The Yellow Jackets were able to bring the score to within three sending the game into the second quarter with a score of 21-18 in favor of the Roadrunners.
The score remained close throughout most of the second quarter, Paine and sophpmore
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) each scored one from downtown to allow MSU Denver to lead the game by 6.
MSU Denver went on a 9-4 run to end the half on top 32-26. Smith led the Roadrunners at half with 8 points. The Roadrunners shot 45 percent from the field and held the Yellow Jackets to 35 percent.
The Yellow Jackets brought the energy to start the second half going on an 11-4 run to begin the third quart and take the lead three minutes in at 37-36.
The Roadrunners were quick to answer back going on a 7-0 run to regain the lead 43-37. The Roadrunners finished the third quarter on top 53-47.
Ohrdorf led the Roadrunners on a 7-2 run scoring all seven for her team and extending the lead to nine with 7:33 remaining in the game.
Ohrdorf continued to lead the Roadrunners scoring another four to give the Roadrunners a 14-point lead with 4:09 left.
The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-1 run the next two minutes cutting the lead to 8 with just over a minute remaining. However, the Roadrunners finished on top 76-68.
MSU Denver will continue its road trip tomorrow Saturday, February 4 taking on South Dakota School of Mines at 3:30 p.m.
