Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (6-7-0, 6-3-0) defeated UCCS (4-7-2, 4-3-2 RMAC) 2-1 on Friday, October 13.
The Mountain Lions put the pressure on the Roadrunners defense early in the half, posting a shot just missing the left post and earning a corner kick in the first minute. However, MSU Denver was able to slow the game down to show some offensive pressure on their end of the field.
Much of the half was played in the middle of the pitch, with neither side able to get control of the ball. It seemed that the game was going to head into half with no score, but the Roadrunners were able to break the seal finding the back of the net with just five minutes left in the half. Freshman
Teo Jukic (Sindelgingen, Germany /Stiftsgynasium) received the ball on the right side of the field and beat his defender to to put a cross right on the foot of freshman
Nils Runnberg (Barsebäck, Sweden/Jensen Education). Runnberg was then able to flick the ball on his first touch to the far post for his sixth goal of the season.
MSU Denver continued to control the game in the second half, with UCCS rarely getting a chance against the Roadrunners defense.
The scored remained 1-0 in favor of the Roadrunners until the final five minutes when the Roadrunners were able to find the dagger. Freshman
Lorenzo Rodriguez (Kaiserslautern, Germany/Ramstein American H.S.) held the ball on the right side of the field and played a beautiful ball into the box to the diving head of defender
Dylan Wood (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College). It was Wood's fourth goal of the season.
The Roadrunners would hold on the rest of the game to earn the 2-1 win.
