Men’s Soccer: Roadrunners Complete Weekend Sweep

Roadrunners win 3-0 over Thunderwolves

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (7-7-0, 7-3-0 RMAC) brought home a commanding 3-0 victory over Colorado State University of Pueblo (2-9-3, 2-5-3 RMAC).

The Roadrunners shot out of the gates with speed and aggression. MSU Denver had their first lead of the game just two minutes into the game.

Freshman Teo Jukic (Sindelgingen, Germany /Stiftsgynasium) scored his first career goal as a Roadrunner on a through ball from the left side that he pushed to the far side of the net for the score. Sophomore Yannick Schad (Munich, Germany/Theodolinden-Gymnasium) assisted Jukic on the goal.

The Thunderwolves came dangerously close to tying the game when a short, turn-around shot by Miles Sanchez hit the right post five minutes after Jukic's goal.

Both teams continued to battle and both had opportunities to score. Roadrunners sophomore Moritz Walther (Heidelberg, Germany /Otteinrich- Gymnasium) hit a free kick high at 29:09.  Three minutes later the Thunderwolves were denied their first goal by MSU Denver goalie, junior James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.), after Cameron Campbell wove through two Roadrunners and ripped a shot from a few yards out.

Sanchez gave the Roadrunners another scare when he headed the ball from the right side of the net towards the left side. The ball barely rolled wide left as another Thunderwolf slid in an attempt to poke the ball in.

The game continued to intensify after sophomore Dylan Wood (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College) was leveled by a Thunderwolf while going for a loose ball. Both benches erupted and screams and shoves ensued as Wood lay on the ground clutching his head. The player who hit wood was assessed a red card and ejected. Wood left the game under his own power, and returned to the game a few minutes later.

The Roadrunners finished the half with one shot-on-goal on a total of five shots: The Thunderwolves posted two shots-on-goal on seven total shots.

MSU Denver started the second half off strong with a few scoring opportunities. At 57:28 junior Kevin Beck (Chandler, Ariz./Basha H.S.) unleashed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that struck the right post. In the seventy-first minute, Beck cut around a defender and found the back of the net, but the goal was waived off due to an offsides call.

Thirty seconds later freshman Danny Bautista (Denver, Colo./North H.S.)'s shot was saved by Thunderwolves goalie Tyler Harvey. Harvey made an incredible save a minute later after a header by Wood. Wood tried another header a minute later, but it went wide right.

At 75:01 CSU Pueblo was assessed a handball penalty in the penalty box. Schad took the penalty kick; he shot the ball to the left of the goalie. Harvey dove to his left and made the initial save, however, Schad followed his own shot and blasted a second shot straight into the goal for a 2-0 Roadrunner lead.

Exactly two minutes later MSU Denver was celebrating again. Bautista took a cross that was deflected and scored on a one-touch finish to the far post to put his team up 3-0.

The Roadrunners finished the game with an incredible 10 shots-on-goal and a total of 20 shots. The Thunderwolves had two shots-on-goal on eight total shots.
