Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's volleyball team(11-6, 8-1RMAC) defeated New Mexico Highlands (5-9, 2-7 RMAC) in three sets on Friday, October 13 to extend its win streak to eight.
The Roadrunners controlled a three set match against the Cowgirls on Friday night, appearing on fire from the start. Junior
Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) began the match with three straight kills. The Roadrunners took an early 7-1 lead with Sturges earned four of the seven points for her team.
The Cowgirls would only come within four of the Roadrunners for the remainder of the set taking the first game 25-14. Sturges and junior
Stephanie Laraway (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) both posted four kills in the set.
The second game of the match seemed to be a replay of the first. New Mexico Highlands fought to stay even with MSU Denver, but the Roadrunners would break away going on an 8-1 run to take a 7-12 lead.
After taking a 20-13 lead, MSU Denver would only allow Highlands to score one more point in the game to take the second set 25-14.
The third set was a much closer fight between the two sides. The game stayed within two points until the ladder part, when the Roadrunners were able to finish the Cowgirls off 25-18.
Sturges led the match with 14 kills hitting .538 and 15 digs for the Roadrunners. Laraway finished the night with 10 kills and posted a .625 hitting percentage. Senior setter
Alyssa Svalberg (Aurora, Colo./Grandview H.S.) had 36 assists in the match.
The Roadrunners will host CSU- Pueblo tomorrow, Saturday, October 14 at 5 p.m.
