Men's Soccer: Roadrunners Fall in Overtime to Westminster

Roadrunners fall 2-1 in first overtime

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (8-9-0, 8-5-0 RMAC) lost a heart-breaker in extra time to the Westminster Griffins (6-10-1, 4-8-1 RMAC) on a snowy Thursday evening.

The Roadrunners started the game off aggressively as a light snow began to fall. MSU Denver pressured the Griffins and scored the first goal of the game at 22:57. Sophomore Danny Bautista (Denver, Colo./North H.S.) scored his second goal of the season on a one-touch diving finish after junior Jacob Coking (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) crossed the ball for an assist.

The Griffins continued to battle and captured some momentum towards the end of the half. They nearly scored after a crossed ball set up a shot inside the 18-yard box; senior Justin Glivar (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) blocked the shot to deny the scoring opportunity.

The ensuing corner kick set up another scoring opportunity. The header off the corner kick was blocked and Roadrunner goalie, freshman Tucker Schneider (Thornton, Colo./Holy Family H.S.), took a dive to make an incredible save.

MSU Denver finished the half with three shots-on-goal and five total shots. The Griffins posted two shots-on-goal and nine total shots.

Westminster carried their late, first-half momentum into the second half. The Griffins tied the game five minutes into the second half after a header squeezed past Scheider near the right post.

MSU Denver came close to taking another lead in the seventy-fourth minute. The Roadrunners headed the ball before junior Hector Banegas (Tucson, Ariz./Rincon H.S.) ripped a shot while falling down. The shot missed just wide-right.

The Roadrunners and Griffins needed extra time to decide a winner, as the second half ended in a 1-1 tie. MSU Denver recorded seven shots in the second half with one shot landing on goal. Westminster posted six shots in the period with four shots-on-goal.

The Westminster Griffins scored the game winning goal five minutes and thirty-seven seconds into extra time on a through ball that was touched around the goalie and pushed to the far side of the goal.

The Roadrunners host Colorado Mesa University at the Regency Athletic Complex on Saturday, October 28 at 1:30 p.m. in their final regular season game.
