Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's soccer team (6-6, 5-3-0 RMAC) defeated CSU- Pueblo (4-5-1, 3-2-1 RMAC) 2-1 in the final second of the game on Sunday, October 8.
The Roadrunners seemed to be on their heals early on, with the Thunderwolves putting pressure of the MSU Denver defense in the opening minutes. However, the Roadrunners created a spark shortly after when junior
Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) collected the ball on the left side of the field and played a through ball into sophomore
Kaylee Mackenzie (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills High School) who took a touch and completed a beautiful finish to the left side of the net.
Both sides struggled to take control of the game in the following minutes, but the Thunderwolves were able to score the equalizer when they were rewarded a penalty kick after a Roadrunners hand ball in the 18-yard box. Junior Mackenzie Bean stepped up for the Thunderwolves to slot in the pk in the 24
th minutes.
The score would remain tied at one through the rest of the half with both teams tallying two shots on goal in the half.
The Roadrunners controlled the tempo of the game in the second half. CSU-Pueblo was able to create a few chances, but MSU Denver defense came up big stopping any chance the Thunderwolves had.
The game appeared to be heading into overtime, when the Roadrunners earned a corner kick with ten seconds left in the second half. Senior
Elise Boisnard (Denver, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) took the corner from the right side, sending a beautiful ball to the far post for sophomore
Makenna Brassard (Thornton, CO) to tap in with just four seconds remaining. The goal was Brassard's first career goal for the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver will return home to host Black Hills State on Sunday, October 15 at 12 noon.
