Women’s Basketball: Big Fourth Quarter Gives Roadrunners 73-54 Win Over Sioux Falls

Smith Leads Roadrunners with a double double

Golden, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team (0-3) earned its first win of the season against University of Sioux falls (1-1) 73-54  in its first game of the Tony Corbetta Classic on Friday, November 17.
 
The first half proved to be a close battle between the two sides with there being many lead changes throughout. 
 
The Cougars led after the first quarter, but the Roadrunners fought back in the second quarter.  The first point of the second quarter would not be scored until nearly four minutes in when the Cougars earned a pair of free throws to take a 19-17 lead.
 
Senior Mikala Gordon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo H.S.) would score the next bucket from downtown for the Roadrunners to steal back the lead at 20-19.
 
The following minutes went back and forth between the two sides and with the score tied at 24 with just over two minutes remaining the in half, junior Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) hit a three for the Roadrunners to take the go ahead. 
 
MSU Denver led the Cougars 28-24 heading into the second half of the game.
 
The Roadrunners carried the push into the third quarter.  After Sioux Falls scored a three, senior J'Nae Squires Horton answered back, scoring one for team to extend the lead to four.
 
The Roadrunners held a nine-point lead with just over six minutes to go in the quarters with MSU Denver leading 40-31 but the Cougars fought to bring the score to within three at 44-41 with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter.
 
MSU Denver finished the quarter with a 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the game up to that point at 53-43.
 
The Roadrunners ran away with the game in the fourth quarter, extending its run to 10 to begin the quarter. The team held the Cougars to just 11 points in the last quarter, while putting up 20 points and taking the 73-54 win.
 
MSU Denver was led by Smith who finished the night with a double double, posting 16 points and 10 boards and adding three assists. Junior Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Roadrunners will take on Central Washington tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Golden.
