Men’s Basketball: MSU Denver Takes Down No. 6 Colorado School of Mines

Cam Williams finished with 26 points for Roadrunners

Golden, Colo.-  The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team took down No. 6 Colorado School of Mines 67-60 on Saturday, December 16.  The Roadrunners improved to 5-6 overall and 4-1 in the Rock Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Orediggers suffered their first loss of the season falling to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the RMAC.

Both teams were slow to get the offense going to begin the first half. Seniors Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) and Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) scored a pair within the first five minutes to give their team a 4-0 lead. The Orediggers followed up going on a 13-2 run, keeping the Roadrunners to just two free throws and holding a 13-6 lead with 12:02 remaining in the half.

MSU Denver would remain in it with senior Shane Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) knocking down a three to bring the score within six at 18-12 with just over nine minutes to play.

The Orediggers took another nine-point lead with 3:46 left in the first but the Roadrunners then outscored mines 7-2 to end the half. Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) hit five of the last seven points in the half including one from behind the arch with seven seconds remaining cut the lead to 26-23 heading into halftime.

MSU Denver came out of halftime determined to take over and control the tempo of the game. Senior Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) gave the Roadrunners an energy boost slamming down a dunk to bring the score within two. Junior Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) followed up converting a layup to tie the game up at 29.

With 14:22 remaining in the game Cam Williams kick-started a 7-0 run, scoring one from downtown to steal the lead for the Roadrunners.  The Roadrunner lead was the first since the opening minutes of the game.

MSU Denver would carry that drive with them through the remainder of the game, never failing to loose its lead. The Roadrunner led by as many as 11 and the closest the Orediggers came was at 1:31 when they came within two points of the Roadrunners to force an exciting final minute.

Senior Shane Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) came up huge for the Roadrunners knocking down a three to extend the lead 63-58 with 1:02 left on the clock.
