Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team (6-4, 2-2 RMAC) posted a huge fourth quarter to take a 56-45 win over Chadron State (3-6, 1-3) on Saturday, December 9.
The game was slow to get rolling in the first quarter with both team scoring a combined six points the first eight minutes. Following a 6-2 Roadrunners lead, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run heading into the second quarter on top 9-6.
Senior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) and
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) scored the first four points of the second quarter to take the lead back for the Roadrunners, but the Eagles answered back scoring the following four.
MSU Denver then appeared to be in control of the game going on a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead with just under three minutes left in the half. The Roadrunners maintained their lead to head into halftime on top 20-19.
Senior
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) led the Roadrunners with eight of the teams 20 points, knocking down four of her five shots from the field. Both teams shot 29 percent from the field in the first half.
The Eagles started the second half off strong to gain the lead early and would go on to lead the entire third quarter. The largest lead for the Eagles came just seconds into the fourth quarter leading the Roadrunners 38-31.
Following the Eagles scoring the first two points of the fourth quarter, the Roadrunners caught fire taking control of the game. The team exploded going on a huge 18-0 run. Squires-Horton lead the run for the Roadrunners, scoring eight points and scoring two from behind the arch. Giving the Roadrunners an 11-point lead at 49-38.
MSU Denver would outscore Chadron 25–9 in the fourth quarter shooting 53 percent and holding Chadron 26 percent. The Roadrunners earned a 56-45 win over the Eagles.
Three finished in double figures for the Roadrunners; Hartegan lead all scorers with 16 and added nine boards. Squires-Horton finished the night with 14. Smith posted 10 points, eight boards, and seven assists.
The Roadrunners will travel to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, December 16 to take on the Orediggers at 1 p.m.
